The Environmental Working Group’s “Dirty Dozen” webpage summarizes produce that tests show to have the highest pesticide residues, based on USDA and FDA data. It forms part of EWG’s annual Shopper’s Guide to Pesticides in Produce, which analyzes tens of thousands of samples to help consumers decide when to buy organic versions of specific fruits and vegetables. The page also references the companion “Clean Fifteen” list for items with the lowest residues. EWG notes that most conventional produce contains some pesticides, but the Dirty Dozen items are especially contaminated, and suggests choosing organic when possible—while emphasizing that eating plenty of fruits and vegetables, in any form, remains essential for health.
